Characteristics of Urethane Prototype Molding

Molding is one of the most important pieces of the prototype development process but there is more than one way of accomplishing this and each technique is carefully considered during the evaluation of a customer’s project. One of the most cost effective and simplest methods to use is by casting urethane in order to create the exact replica needed for the sample. Urethane is a material that has several benefits and can be used in multiple ways because of its chemical makeup which sets it apart from other options.

In its liquid form it has a similar consistency to water which allows it to be applied in several different ways such as being brushed onto the mold, sprayed or poured into the pre-prepared container. The key to ensuring that it comes out correctly is in the mold preparation which must have at least two layers of sealant and then a releasing adjustment to prevent the urethane from permanently attaching to the container.

Any adjustments or modifications on how the urethane was applied have to be made quickly before it hardens because it cannot be re-molded as other materials can. One of the primary benefits is that it can be created in a full range of soft flexibility to tough hardness depending on what the desired outcome of the product is supposed to be. This allows it to be used on projects that cover a wide range of characteristics but are also needed on a rapid turnaround basis.

It is resistant to abrasions and tears which helps to make it durable and tough for multiple uses but can be used at a low cost to the customer. This makes cast urethane molding an ideal option for prototyping services that need to build a sample quickly and accurately but keep it within a reasonable budget.
