Metal Rapid Prototyping: Technologies, Benefits, and Use Cases

Metal rapid prototyping allows you to shorten development cycles and avoid the expense of traditional tooling. More importantly, it lets you get parts that would be difficult to manufacture quickly and cost-effectively using conventional methods. When you work with the right manufacturer like us, you can also reduce many of the design restrictions and material waste often associated with subtractive manufacturing processes, such as CNC machining.

At HLH Prototypes, we offer DMLS technology that can support everything from early-stage prototypes to low-volume production parts. This means you won’t have to look elsewhere for a service that lets you make prototypes and end-use parts.

About the technology

Direct Metal Laser Sintering, or DMLS, is an industrial 3D printing process that builds your metal parts layer by layer.

During the process, a high-powered laser selectively fuses fine metal powder according to your digital design. By repeating this process one layer at a time, DMLS can create highly complex geometries that would be difficult or even impossible to produce using many traditional manufacturing methods.

If you’re familiar with Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), the process works in a similar way. The main difference is that DMLS uses metal powders instead of polymers for metal rapid prototyping.

At HLH Prototypes, parts can be produced using a range of production-grade materials, including:

  • Tool steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Titanium
  • Copper
  • Aluminium

This variety allows you to select materials that match the performance requirements of your specific application.

What are the benefits?

One of the biggest advantages of metal rapid prototyping is its flexibility.

Because the process works directly from a digital design, we can produce parts without creating molds or complex tooling first.  DMLS can also produce complex internal channels and lattice structures, or even topology-optimized designs that would be extremely difficult to manufacture using conventional machining processes. You can explore new design possibilities while accelerating product development as a result.

Complete prototypes quickly

Metal rapid prototyping eliminates your need to invest in tooling or molds, or even an extensive production setup.

Since parts are built directly from your CAD files, you can move from design to finished part much faster. This gives your team more time to evaluate designs and make improvements more quickly.

More cost-effective

Tooling expenses can significantly increase development costs, especially when you’re working on low-volume projects.

With metal rapid prototyping, you don’t need to use custom molds to make small batches of highly complex prototype parts. Without major tooling investments, you can validate designs and test functionality while controlling development costs.

This can be particularly valuable during product development, where you may need to do multiple design revisions before moving into production.

Use cases of metal rapid prototyping

  • Aerospace – If you’re designing aerospace parts, metal rapid prototyping lets you create titanium components with complex internal flow channels and lightweight lattice structures. You also have the freedom to design high-temperature alloy parts. With these designs and materials, you can promote weight reduction without compromising strength and performance.
  • Automotive industry – In the automotive sector, you can use metal rapid prototyping to test aluminum components and accelerate design iterations for high-performance and specialty vehicles.
  • Industrial manufacturing – With DMLS, you can create injection mold inserts with integrated conformal cooling channels to improve production efficiency in manufacturing. The technology also lets you produce prototypes of high-strength custom fixtures and specialized manufacturing tools for testing before you move into final production.
