Top 3 Episodes of the Prototype and See Podcast

Today we’re going to discuss the top 3 podcast episodes 2023 from HLH Rapid’s Prototype and See podcast series, why they qualify as our top 3, and why you should tune in too.

Prototype and See is a podcast series created by HLH. Based around all-things innovation, the Prototype and See Podcast provides insight into the product development journey. In each episode we invite state-of-the-art innovators and our clients to share their stories of successes and failures, giving the listener valuable insider knowledge in a range of fields, including aerospace and aviation, robotics, MedTech and more.

For these reasons, Prototype and See would be a great listen for both budding and seasoned innovators, to enhance understanding of the industry and its trends, as well as to be inspired by others’ ingenuity.

1. Episode 1: Demystifying Product Development: Top 3 Myths, Current Trends and Predictions

The debut episode of Prototype and See debunked 3 common misconceptions within product development. Managing director (MD) of HLH Rapid James Murphy, Prototype and see’s host, sat down with Gethin Roberts, MD of Iterate, a product development consultancy to discuss the 3 myths and the industry in general.

Gethin’s experience in the industry spans 20 years, working as a product design engineer for 10 years before founding Iterate in 2014. He even authored ‘the product innovators handbook’, so if there’s anyone who can provide guidance on the product development journey, it’s Gethin.

As well as the myths ‘all you need is an idea’, ‘are patents essential?’, and ‘you must manufacture in China’, the pair covered an overview of the whole development process, including grants and funding, design challenges, how global events impacted development, generative design and manufacturing.

It’s clear that this episode is ideal for anyone who is looking to (or is already) developing a product of their own. They can use James and Gethin’s experience to their advantage, to guide themselves away from the pitfalls of the process and help them on their way to success.

2. Episode 6: Developing One of the World’s most Dexterous Robot Hands

Episode 6 of the podcast features Rich Walker, Director and Co-founder of ‘Shadow Hand’, one of the longest-running robotics companies in the UK. This episode covers all things robotics, from technical engineering challenges, the difficulties of recreating biology in technology, ethical application of robots in society, AI and deep learning, and the global future of robotics.

From a humble startup who used wooden prototypes in their early days, Rich and his colleagues built Shadow Hand from the ground up into a global company that produces one of the world’s most advanced robot hands. For over 25 years, Rich has worked in various areas of the company including building, designing, fundraising and business development, and brings a wealth of knowledge to the conversation.

Anyone interested in innovation, engineering and technology, the robotics industry, or the journey from startup to international success should tune into this episode of Prototype and See.

3. Episode 7: 3 Challenges of the MedTech Industry and how to Overcome them

In the 7th episode of Prototype and See, James sits down with MedTech CEO, Victor Suturin and they discuss 3 prevalent challenges in the MedTech industry, and tips to overcome them. The 3 challenges are the time pressure imposed on MedTech products, the high costs involved with developing a MedTech product and the regulatory limitations which make even everything more complicated.

Victor has been in the medical industry for years, as both an investor and a product developer. He’s the CEO of Aliform, a company that has created a medical device currently in development that treats cellulite. As someone who has experience from an investors point of view and as the developer in a MedTech startup his knowledge of the industry is invaluable.

So, listen to the episode to hear Victor’s perspective on the industry, it’s challenges and how to get around them. If you’re in (or looking to get into) the MedTech industry, particularly as a startup, this is the episode for you.
